Grupo Niche
Grupo Niche is a Colombian salsa orchestra formed in 1979, recognized by critics and the public alike as the most successful in Latin America over the last four decades. It was started in the city of Bogotá by Jairo Varela Martínez, a native of the department of Chocó. With the passage of time and in search of inspiration, they decided to travel to the city of Buenaventura on the Colombian Pacific coast, and finally, in 1983, they settled in Cali, in the western region of the country, which would become their base for operations.
In 1990, Jairo Varela produced "Cielo de Tambores", the group's most successful album. Songs like "Una Aventura", "Busca por Dentro", "Se parecencia tanto a ti", "Sin Sentimiento", "Cali Ají" and "Debiera Olvidarla" broke new ground and were an undeniable success throughout Latin America. With their tours, the group used their newfound influence to entertain their immigrant compatriots and the ethnic groups of each country.
On August 8, 2012, teacher Jairo Varela suffered another heart attack that caused his death. There was great grief over his passing in Colombia and several other countries. His funeral lasted four days due to the ovation of his fans. Numerous tributes were received from
governments and individuals, and the legend of "Jairo" began.

Grupo Niche es una orquesta de salsa colombiana conformada en 1979, reconocida por la crítica y el público por igual, como la más exitosa en América Latina durante las últimas cuatro décadas. Fue iniciado en la ciudad de Bogotá por Jairo Varela Martínez, oriundo del departamento de Chocó. Con el paso del tiempo y en busca de inspiración, decidieron viajar a la ciudad de Buenaventura en la costa del Pacífico colombiano, y finalmente, en 1983, se instalaron en Cali, en la región occidental del país, que se convertiría en su base de operaciones.
En 1990, Jairo Varela produjo “Cielo de Tambores”, el álbum de mayor éxito del grupo. Canciones como “Una Aventura”, “Busca por Dentro”, “Se pareció tanto a ti”, “Sin Sentimiento”, “Cali Ají” y “Debiera Olvidarla” abrieron nuevos caminos y fueron un éxito innegable en toda América Latina. Con sus recorridos, el grupo utilizó su nueva influencia para entretener a sus compatriotas inmigrantes y a los grupos étnicos de cada país.
El 8 de agosto de 2012, el maestro Jairo Varela sufrió otro infarto que le provocó la muerte. Hubo una gran aflicción por su fallecimiento en Colombia y varios otros países. Su funeral duró cuatro días debido a la ovación de sus fans. Se recibieron numerosos homenajes de gobiernos y personas, y comenzó la leyenda de «Jairo».
